Coaching tips

Christmas time – cheating time

As a personal coach and fitness provider, you probably experience it every year. Your members have big goals – lose weight, build muscle, get fitter – but then comes the Christmas season and it’s hard for people to stick to their plan.

During Christmas time, temptations lurk around every corner and people like to turn a blind eye. Many are therefore afraid of having taken steps backwards at the beginning of the year.

As a personal coach, you can address your members’ concerns and help them through this time with individual approaches.

Shortly after the holidays, we asked personal coach Max von Daehne for an interview. How does he provide the necessary support to motivate his clients again after the Christmas season and to pursue their goals?

Hello Max,

Because of gingerbread, roasted almonds, mulled wine and lots of time with friends and family training and healthy eating often fall by the wayside.

How have your clients dealt with this time? Are they very worried that they have regressed in terms of goals?

In fact, less than expected. Most people have their diet so well under control that they could really relax for the holidays and didn’t have to do without anything. With a few little tricks, most people really got through the period well.

“Balance is the key to a healthy diet that also allows some cheating!”

For example, if I have a date at the Christmas market at lunchtime and have a sausage with fries, then the other meals that day simply have to be lower in calories and “healthier”. Balance is of course the key to a healthy diet that also allows some cheating. This doesn’t just apply to the Christmas season, of course.”

How do you support your clients to get motivated again after the holidays?

“Magicline and the MySports app help a lot in these times! For example, I often use push notifications to remind my clients of little things. For example, small daily challenges, such as ‘Eat a portion of vegetables with every meal today’ or a workout video to sweat out the mulled wine from the day before.

“Through push notifications, I can remind my clients of small daily challenges or provide them with workout videos.”

“Push messages allow me to contact all customers within minutes at the push of a button, without spending a lot of time emailing or texting.

Many of my clients spent their holidays at home and then didn’t have time to attend a personal coaching session in the studio. In such moments I like to fall back on Zoom and stream my “home workout”. This way you can burn a few more calories from home.

Another feature that makes organisation a lot easier for me in particular is the waiting list feature for class planning.

As soon as the maximum number of participants for one of my classes is reached, all other people that are interested in the class are automatically booked onto the waiting list.

If someone drops out, the customer from the waiting list moves up directly. Especially during the holidays this saved me a lot of time as clients were automatically reminded as soon as a place became available.”

“All these tools make it easier for me to communicate with my clients, which for me is the key to good personal coaching. It also brings me even closer to them and I get direct feedback via the MySports app.”

What do personal coaches – but also fitness providers – have to pay attention to right now so that their members stay on the ball?

“Offer alternatives and don’t ban anything! Keep in touch with members and customers on a regular basis. That is my secret recipe ;-)”

Thank you, Max! We wish you a good start into the new year!
