Preventive measures for your members

Preventive measures for physical and mental well-being

Even though fitness providers are not officially classified as relevant to health in times of the pandemic in many countries, studies show how important exercise is for physical and mental well-being.

As a fitness instructor or studio manager, you should educate your clients/ members that fitness as a preventive measure is imperative and can help them get through stressful and exceptional situations better and healthier.

Integrate preventive services into your studio

Idea 1 – Strengthen mental health

If you implement yoga and meditation classes next to your classic fitness offerings, you can not only improve the physical condition of your members, but also support their mental health. This way, your members will find more inner peace and will not be so easily thrown off balance by extraordinary situations.

Yoga teacher Tabea Krooß explains what you should be aware of when offering meditation and yoga classes and how important they can be for your members.

Idea 2 – Classes for different concerns

What are the most common complaints/illnesses among your target group? Ask your members what they would like to do preventively for their health. For example, they may want to lose weight, strengthen their back or change their eating habits.

For a survey among your members you can use e.g. your social media channels or of course the communication centre in your Magicline. Create a newsletter and ask your members to participate in a short survey.

Based on your findings, you can then create a class schedule that addresses these areas and helps your members in a preventive way. You can also create materials and give them to your members, e.g. in the form of a PDF.

Idea 3 – Preventive nutrition counselling

Diseases often arise from poor nutrition. The cardiovascular system is particularly affected. By offering nutritional counselling in your studio, you help your members to eat consciously and to understand what healthy nutrition means. Ideally, you should have a trained nutritionist on your team who can provide professional support to your members.

Nutrition advisor Alexandra Jorga will tell you how important such nutrition advice is and how you can make it as easy as possible for your members.

Idea 4 – Preventive measures consultation

As a fitness provider, you have the opportunity to educate your clients about health factors they might not think about in their daily life. You are in personal contact with your members in many different situations (e.g. during the initial assessment, when creating the training plan, etc.) – use these situations to find out what the client’s daily life looks like and try to consult with some easy to implement tips.

For example, ask the following questions:

  • Do you work at a desk (i.e. mostly sitting)?
  • What is your current activity level?
  • How do you eat?
  • How many hours do you sleep?
  • Do you smoke?
  • etc.

Of course you don’t want to lecture, but you can, for example, point out that a predominantly sedentary job can cause back problems. Then you give tips (e.g. small exercises for at home or a back class in your studio) on how these issues can either be prevented or improved.

Idea 5 – Training plans

For your members, you can also create a training plan in your Magicline that includes the preventive view. For example, if you have found out in a personal conversation that your member works predominantly in a sitting position, you can include exercises such as transversal abduction, which is a counter-movement to the everyday posture.

Whatever ideas you implement to support your members preventively, you position yourself as an indispensable expert on their health.
